Ranked by the QS International Assessment of universities (Quacquarelli Symonds World Universities Rankings) among the first 100-150 faculties of modern languages in the world, the Faculty of Letters from Cluj offers a broad range of undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes. Candidates may choose one combination of two specialisations of a native language and literature (Romanian, Hungarian, German), a modern language (English, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Norwegian, Finnish), an Asian language (Japanese, Chinese, Korean) a classical language (Latin, ancient Greek, Hebrew), and Comparative and universal literature, Applied modern languages, Ethnology and folklore. Language and Literature Field

Selection criteria:

  • Written test in Romanian language (90 minutes) calculated as 50% of the admission score.
  • Baccalaureate score calculated as 50% of the admission score.
  • After completion of written test in Romanian language, candidates will write in maximum 30 minutes an essay in an international language (English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish), on a Pass/ Fail basis.

*Olympic candidates (Prizes II, III, special mentions, special prizes) will not take the written test, but will write the essay in a foreign language.
*Candidates with international language certificates will take the written test but will not write the essay.

* Candidates who have received awards (2nd and 3rd prizes) at interdisciplinary school Olympiads (Reading as a Life Skill and National Olympiad of Linguistics) will not take the written test but will write the essay in a foreign language.
* Candidates who have received awards at Interdisciplinary Olympiads (Reading as Life Skills and National Olympiad of Linguistics) and who have international language certificates will not take the written test and will not write the essay.

  1. Specialisation: CLASSICAL PHILOLOGY (LATIN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE - OLD GREEK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE), (3 years, full time)

Selection criteria:

  • Written test in foreign language (90 minutes) calculated as 50% of the admission score.
  • Baccalaureate score calculated as 50% of the admission score.
  •  For candidates with a bachelor's degree, the baccalaureate score is replaced by the graduation exam score.

NOTE:

  • Modern languages and literatures for the Minor specializations (B): English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian, Finnish, Hebrew, Chinese, Korean.
  • As a Minor specialization Comparative Universal Literature can be studied in both Romanian and Hungarian.
  • Candidates for beginner level specialisations (Japanese, Chinese, Korean) will take the written test in any of the 6 international languages (English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish). In these specialisations the written test cannot be taken in the language of the chosen specialisation (Japanese, Chinese, Korean).
  • Candidates at beginner level (French, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Norwegian, Finnish, Latin) will take the written test in any of the six international languages (English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish) or in the language of the chosen specialisation (Ukrainian, Norwegian, Finnish, Latin).

  • For the Japanese Language and Literature specialisation (A), Japanese cannot come into combination with other Asian languages, namely Chinese Language and Literature, and Korean Language and Literature.
  • Candidates at advanced level (English and German) will sit for the written test only in the foreign language of their chosen specialisation.

Language level:

  • Advanced level: English and German.
  • Beginner level: Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Norwegian, Finnish, Hebrew, Old Greek.
  • Beginner and/ or advanced level: French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Latin.
  • For candidates from the Applied Modern languages department, the level of language skills must be advanced.

Cultural Studies Field

Applied Modern Languages Field

  1. Specialisation: APPLIED MODERN LANGUAGES (3 years, full time)

Selection criteria:

  • Written and oral communication skills test in the first foreign language calculated as 50% of the admission score
  • Written and oral communication skills test in the second foreign language calculated as 50% of the admission score

Note

  •  In order to pass the written and oral communication skills test in the two languages of the specialisation, the candidate must pass both oral and written component of the test.
  • The score obtained at the baccalaureate / bachelor's exam is not a selection criterion for the Applied Modern Languages field.
  • In accordance with the European and national standards in the Applied Modern Languages field, the two languages of the specialisation are joint majors. Thus, assessment of written and oral communication skills in both languages chosen by the candidate is mandatory.  Assessment will be carried with the Department of Applied Modern Languages at the Center for Language Industries (CIL-LMA) based on schedule according to language pairings, starting January 2019. The CIL Certificate obtained is valid for admission to the Applied Modern Languages (LMA) specialisation only for the current year.
